Charlotte-The Daily Flow: The PERFECT solution-for a big dilemma...

The PERFECT solution-for a big dilemma...

First you have to read through this problem...a moral dilemma as it were:

You are driving down the road on a wild stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop with three people waiting for the bus:

  1. An old woman looking like she is about to die.
  2. An old friend that once saved your life.
  3. The perfect partner that you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you give a ride to....knowing that there is only room for one passenger in your car?

Be creative and think, before you answer.

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that once occurred on a job screening application.

You could pick number one, the old woman, because she is going to die, and you should save her first. You could pick the old friend, because he once saved your life, and now you could return a favor. However, you may never be able to find your perfect partner again.

The person that was hired (out of 200 applicants) was the one that responded with this: I would give the car keys to my old friend and have him drive the dying woman to the hospital, then I would sit with my perfect partner and wait for the bus.

Thinking outside of the bus box, can lead you to fantastic new (and inclusive) solutions.

My first reaction is that the job opening wasn't for an actuary!  They must have been interviewing from a job that required a high degree of risk. Way to risky to hang out with a stranger - guess I watch too much TV.  Personally, I would have called a rescue service to pick them.

Jane,

That's definitely thinking out of the box! Thanks for sharing. I'll have to use that in my interviewing process...haha!

I thought the answer was brilliant...until I read Peggy's comment.  Now I have to agree with her.  Doesn't seem to brilliant when you consider you are placing yourself in a dangerous situation alone with a stranger.

Jane, wow!  That really is the absolutely perfect answer!  And I dunno.  If it was a well lit public place, it doesn't sound all that risky.  Besides, if anything happened, there would be two people to ID the guy in a line up.

That is perfect, and the windy night would blow you both closer together!

I have heard it.  My mind never went to the risk of sitting with the perfect partner, because I presumed that the person driving was a male.  As a female I would never stop on a dark and stormy night in the middle of nowhere for anything.

Jane ~ I have never heard that one, but it was great!  What a terrific way to think outside the box bus!

I say throw caution to the wind (it is windy and stormy) and sit beside the hunky guy.  Glad the other two were taken care of!

Peggy, I had originally thought of saving the old lady...but love the solution given.

Michael, the solution is definitely out of the box, and seemed to handle all three individuals nicely.

Sharon, that's how I picked my husband up:) Strange as he can be!

Pat, I am all over taking the risk...everything is a calculated risk and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If the old lady is good dying next to this strange guy, and the other one is my friend, that already saved my life, the risk looks minimal.

Mary, great answer!

Jane, the stranger might fear you...after all, you just gave your car up-to what appears to be another complete stranger and an old lady.

Melinda, I loved the twist on this and so simple...yet, I would have never put it together. So, now I think maybe I am sinking into a close minded tunnel vision type of person...time to step it up a notch on creative solutions!

Sally-I am with you! Caution to the wind!

Michael, store this for a rainy day!
